This epic 7-day highway bike tour will begin on June 24, 2018 in Leadville, Colorado, the highest city in the United States with an elevation of 10,152 feet above sea level. From Leadville, we’ll bike over the 12,095-foot-high Independence Pass – the highest paved pass in Colorado! Be sure to take time to acclimatize before this tour. After descending from Independence Pass, we will drive through the charming town of Aspen and arrive in Carbondale, traveling 88 miles in one day.
On June 25, the route will leave Carbondale via 8,763-foot McClure Pass and end in Delta, making 87 miles in a day. From the Delta, we will travel 72 miles to Palisade via the spectacular scenic and historic Grand Mesa Trail. After Palisade, at about mile 4, we will enter I-70 and drive on the side of the road for about 17 miles. At mile 22, we will leave I-70 to take the frontage road until mile 71. Then another 4 miles awaits us on I-70 west of Glenwood, entering Chakra and exiting in front of Glenwood. This day will cover 75 miles, ending in Glenwood Springs where we will have a rest day.
After a relaxing day in Glenwood Springs, we will drive 31 miles along the Colorado River Road, of which 17 miles is a well-maintained dirt road (a short unpaved option is available).Before you realize it, the last day of the tour – from Eagle over the 10,424-foot Tennessee Pass back to Leadville – will be covered in 73 miles.The tour will end with a celebratory event!
Helpful tips and preparation
Acclimatization: Colorado’s high altitudes can cause mountain sickness.It is recommended to arrive a few days prior to the start of the tour to get used to the altitude.
Training: Regular long-distance training and strengthening your overall fitness will help prepare you for the challenges of the tour.
Equipment: Make sure your bike is in top condition and stock up on all the necessary equipment, including spare parts and tools.
Nutrition and Hydration: Keep your energy and hydration levels high during the tour.Drink water and consume carbohydrates regularly.
