Cyclists all over the world look forward to the Colorado cycling season. The physical challenges of our high elevation (perfect for bragging rights) combine with the amazing alpine scenery for a cyclist’s dream destination.
Many of Colorado’s road and mountain bike races cater to serious competitors, but they also have shorter and less intense routes for more casual pedalers – and you’ll get fresh mountain air and loud cheering at the finish line no matter the length of the ride. Here’s the bike race plan:
Pikes Peak
Choose from a one-, two- or three-day mountain bike challenge on the slopes of the famous Pikes Peak along jeep trails, dirt trails and more than 100 miles of technical trails, crushing climbs and exhilarating descents.
Blue Sky Hill Climb
This popular but demanding race to the Blue Sky Mountain Scenic Byway, which climbs nearly 7,000 feet in just 28 miles, has been popular with adventurous outfitters for more than 50 years. From the summit of 14,264-foot Blue Sky Mountain (formerly Mount Evans), Colorado’s 14th highest peak, riders get Colorado’s only view of the Continental Divide.
Tour de Steamboat
This non-competitive ride includes rides ranging from 26 to 100 miles (for road and gravel bikers) that wind through the Yampa River Valley, and concludes with a post-race barbecue and craft beer garden. The scenic ride benefits local charities, including the Yampa Valley Sustainability Council, Routt County Partners, Reaching Everyone Preventing Suicide, and the South Routt Recreation Association.
Courage Classic
This two-day, 79-mile tour, which benefits Kids Colorado, climbs from Leadville to Summit County and back through quiet country roads and challenging mountain passes, all with great views of the Rocky Mountains. There is also a 12-mile family ride.
Copper Triangle
This mountain road is adorned with breathtaking views, great roads, and three climbs to over 10,000 feet, each with a timed segment. The 79-mile loop covers three passes (Fremont Pass, Tennessee Pass, and Vail Pass) with a total elevation gain of 6,500 feet.
Stonewall Century
Spanning 102 miles, 7,500 feet of elevation, and following some of Colorado’s most beautiful scenic highways, the Stonewall Century is a joy to ride. End the ride with a party and barbecue.
Tour de Cure
The American Diabetes Association hosts this race, which offers biking, running, and walking options for the whole family!
Denver Century Ride
This celebration includes rides ranging from 25 to 100 miles on trails that wind through city streets, mountain trails (including options to climb Lookout Mountain or Chatfield State Park), and greenways. There are also clinics, the opportunity to showcase dream bikes from leading manufacturers, and more.
